[accidental voice post /action] This birthday sucks.
[The gentle rustling sound of wind through the trees comprises the first several seconds of the entry. Later, the it's joined by the sound of movement, and a quiet thunk, like something sharp driven into wood.]

Another year. The last?

[Anyone in the area will see an even-more-than-usually somber ninja chilling out on his roof, looking out at the forest. He looks pretty bushed.]

[ooc: Not everyone celebrates their 21st birthday by going out and getting fall-down drunk, it seems.]

If she has the patience, he really will be back in a few minutes -- he just caught sight of someone that looked remarkably like his kidnapped brother, save for some rather noticeable changes and was terribly obligated to investigate. If she gets worried and comes after, he'll most likely be on his way back home.]

[And this is the way a face shuts down, erasing any hint of emotion or thought, leaving nothing but chilly blankness behind. Does it involve Sasuke?

The house is no good; Katou's inside, and Itachi has a feeling he doesn't want any eavesdroppers. Nor does he have the patience to find somewhere more suitable. His gaze flickers upwards -- back to the roof it is. Without further words, he ninjas his way up, obviously expecting her to follow, retaking the spot he'd left when he went chasing after Sasuke. He picks up his abandoned journal and smooths out a few pages before snapping it shut.]

[ Sasuke, after successfully ninjaing around the forest and around Itachi's clones, finds himself within range of the original. His first thought? Turn and flee. Of course he just couldn't be that lucky. During his "hasty retreat" Sasuke stepped on a branch. Oh yes, a branch. Why was it there, why did he not notice it? Who knows, it's just one of those things.

By the way, after he hit it? He floored it. ]

[ Because certain forces in the universe ~~thought it was funny~~ thought it was funny. Being that, beyond the Malnosso, Sasuke knew nothing of these forces, he couldn't quite think about them. Of course, by that logic, he couldn't consider the 'why is he blond?' query either as he knew nothing about it. Ignorance sucked.

Ahem.

The chase was extremely and inevitably short, mostly because it seemed like Sasuke had taken the 'blonds are idiots' myth and proved it true. He, once again on a branch that popped out of no where, tripped. Yes, Uchiha Sasuke (and certainly not Karin Koenig) tripped. ]

[Itachi really wasn't looking forward to a chase.

So maybe fortune was smiling on the birthday boy, all things considered. Rare miracles and all that. But whatever, one way or another Sasuke pretty much faceplanted a few yards in front of him, and he took the opportunity to get in close (though not close enough to get owned if Sasuke was armed and pissy), blocking further progress in that particular direction. Unless, y'know, he went around.]

Sasuke..?

[This had a rather questioning tone to it -- mostly because Sasuke was, as far as he recalled, dark haired ... and generally a superior ninja, and very not prone to tripping over sticks and whatnot, no matter how unfortunately placed they might be.]

[ ~~Proven, proven!~~ Honestly, for a second? Sasuke wasn't sure he was supposed to answer that. He was himself for fifteen years (and he couldn't imagine being anyone else, which brought up questions concerning why he didn't know if he was supposed to answer), but the tripping and the hair made him wonder. Of course, it was unimaginable to think he was someone other than who he was, but the oddities that were piling up were becoming more than he could take. Clumsiness didn't befit him, it was a quality Naruto possessed. Not himself, not an Uchiha.

All the same, he got up and half-turned to face Itachi. He would have preferred not being spotted, to wait the dye out, but luck wasn't with him. ]

[Itachi stared at Sasuke, crimson eyes widening as he regarded his younger brother. He looked away, then back quickly -- no, still the same.

What? When the Malnosso kidnapped him, they did painful, traumatic experiments on his eyes, whereas it looks like they just dunked Sasuke's head in bleach and locked him in a tanning booth for a few hours. Not that Itachi would complain -- assuming his younger brother still had all his organs intact.

...this sudden clumsiness was something else entirely, however. Perhaps a problem with depth perception -- a difficult hurdle to overcome for a ninja, but not impossible.]

Did they hurt you badly?

[ The double-take aggravated Sasuke further and he had to keep himself from leaving just then. Somehow, it seemed like the Malnosso hit a sore spot when they decided to go for the bleached effect. He, without realizing it, was proud of his appearance. He stood out as a Uchiha, and there had never been any mistaking him for anyone else. Now he was just 'that blond with the Sharingan,' it was almost like he was an outcast in a clan that didn't even exist anymore.

Sasuke frowned deeper, awkward at the question but not up for giving a 'mind your own business'. ]

No. [ Sasuke tugged on one of his bangs, probably a little harsher than he should have. ~~He was having a bitchfit over his hair of all things.~~ The contempt in his voice was obvious. ] Just this.

That's good. [In reference to the not-being-hurt answer, anyway. The hair ... well. That would take a little getting used to. Maybe some level of vanity was an Uchiha thing, because Itachi quietly quailed inside at the thought of a similar fate.]

You could have done much worse, Sasuke. The Malnosso seemed rather taken with the properties of the Sharingan when I was in their care. [He's silent for a moment, then gives the faintest hint of a smile.] If it's really so terrible, I'm sure it can be remedied.

[ Could have, but this was far from what he was expecting. Torture, pain, that was what he heard of; that was what he had prepared himself for. He'd even resigned himself to the possibility that they would bring up Itachi's massacre again, and made it a point to remember the experience for the entire five days he'd sat in front of the barrier.

He could deal with pain, he could put aside trauma. And he could cope with his sharingan being tested. This was something else though, and it was as baffling as it was irritating. ]

What do you want anyway?

I'm busy anyway. [ Hey, was that hurt mixed in there? Dammit, he wasn't supposed to feel that over being second anymore. That just fueled Sasuke's aggravation further and, without waiting for a reply, he went back to playing ninja in the forest. ]

[Well, looks like that's that, then. Which suits Itachi just fine; time around Sasuke is more than a little awkward, and he didn't want angry female ninjas beating down his doors wondering what's going on -- Katou would just give him grief about that one, too, and that was the last thing he needed.

And the kid looked unhurt, except for some slight bruising to the ego. That, he could live with.

Once Sasuke disappeared into the forest, Itachi turned on his heel and began the short walk home.]
